FRANKLIN PARK, NJ - A Kendall Park man caught on video punching an elderly man in the face and robbing him of a gold chain, has been charged with second-degree robbery according to police.
Dain A. Smith, 22, of Susan Court in the Kendall Park section of South Brunswick robbed a 70-year-old unidentified Monmouth Junction man Friday evening on May 18, according to police. Police were called to a Route 27 strip mall in Franklin Park for a reported robbery in progress, according to police.
The victim told police he was approached by a male who started to speak to him.
"During the conversation, the suspect demanded that the victim give him his gold necklace," Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson said in a statement. "When the victim refused, the victim was punched in the face, and the suspect forcefully ripped the gold chain off his neck before fleeing southbound on Route 27."
Additional patrol units responded to the scene but were unable to locate the suspect.
During the police investigation detectives from the Franklin Township Police Department obtained surveillance video identifying Smith as the person who committed the robbery.
On May 19, police spotted Smith walking on Delar Parkway in Franklin Park where he was arrested without incident, police say.
Smith is at the Somerset County Jail awaiting a bail hearing.
