SOMERSET, NJ - The lack of clean water is the latest reason the opening of the heavily anticipated spray park at Colonial Park will be delayed yet again, according to a social media post from the Somerset County Park Commission's Facebook page.

Spray Park Update We regret to inform you that the Colonial Park Spray Park will not open as planned. Unfortunately, water test sampling results over the course of the last two (2) weeks have revealed bacterial exceedances. Commission staff has worked tremendously hard to correct the water quality, but the results have not been favorable. We anticipate the results of yet another water test this week. Please be assured that the Park Commission staff is working to ensure that we can get this facility up and running as soon as possible.

The heavily anticipated spray park project at Colonial Park is set to open Aug. 1 if all goes well according to officials.

"Construction of the facility, itself, is complete," Director of the Park Commission, Geoffrey Soriano told TAPinto in an email. "Other necessary collateral work (paving, landscaping, etc.) is almost done."

When the park is officially open the hours of operation will be from 10 am to 7 pm weekdays and weekends until Sept. 2 and weekends only from Sept. 7 to Sept. 29, according to officials.

"It is anticipated that the Commission will be in a position to open the spray park on August 1st," Soriano said. "Presently, the August 1st date is the Commission’s most precise estimate, and we feel strongly that our anticipated timeline will be the reality."

The spray park itself will be approximately 6,500 square feet with more than 14 water attractions, while the total area for the park will be 1.6 acres, according to officials.

Soriano does caution the opening date is pending necessary inspections and approvals that must be completed and received prior to an opening date.

The commission is also accepting applications for spray park attendants. Those seeking one of the positions must be at least 18, and available to work various shifts including weekends and holidays. Communication skills and the ability to enforce rules and policies is highly desired.

First Aid/CPR/AED certification required. Starting rate $10.50 per hour. To apply call (908) 722-1200 ext. 5239 or email

"The Park Commission is anxious to flip the water switch, open the gate and allow our youngest Somerset County citizens to get wet, cool off, and have fun," Soriano said.
