SOMERSET, NJ - Authorities are investigating the death of an unidentified man whose body was found in a wooded area off Phillips Road in Franklin Township, according to a news release. 

Somerset County Prosecutor, Michael H. Robertson said in a statement, a 9-1-1 call had been placed on July 1 at approximately 8:23 pm saying a body was spotted in the wooded area off Phillips Road. 

Responding officers from the Franklin Township Police department confirmed the location of the body, police say.

"Detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes and Crime Scene Units, the Franklin Township Police Department, and medical investigators from the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner’s Office responded to conduct the investigation," Robertson said in a statement. "A post-mortem examination will be performed on the decedent to determine the cause and manner of death, along with a positive identification pending next of kin notification."

The cause of death is unknown at this time. 

Robertson, Chief of County Detectives John W. Fodor, and Franklin Township Police Chief Richard Grammar request anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has information pertaining to this incident to contact the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit by calling Somerset County Communications at (908) 526-2500 or the Franklin Township Police Department or via the STOPit app.
