SOMERSET, NJ - An unidentified local man died following an afternoon fire on Hempstead Drive, according to a news release. 

"There is an ongoing investigation into a fatal fire that occurred today in Franklin Township," Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson said in a news release. 

The Franklin Township Police department received a report of a fire on Hempstead Drive at approximately 1:37 pm. Volunteer firefighters from Franklin Township and FTPD officers responded to the scene.

"The occupant of the apartment was transported to a local area trauma center where he was pronounced dead," Robertson said in a statement. 

Detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office Fire Investigation Unit and the Franklin Township Police Department are conducting an investigation to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
