SOMERSET, NJ - The Franklin Township Police Department opened an investigation into a report of shots being fired at an unidentified local man's vehicle on Wednesday night, according to a news release. Police responded to the scene at approximately 11:01 pm.  

"Franklin Township Police officers responded to the area of Baier Avenue and Phillips Road for a 9-1-1 call of shots fired," Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson said in a news release. "Upon arrival, Franklin Township Police Officers met with an individual, whom authorities are identifying as a Somerset adult male resident, who stated that while driving north on Phillips Road toward Baier Avenue he heard multiple pops which he initially thought were fireworks."

Police say the victim stated after hearing something strike his vehicle, which was also occupied by an adult male Somerset resident, he realized that it was gun shots.

FTPD detectives observed damage to the unidentified victim's vehicle and determined the cause to be from a gun shot. After canvassing the area police found twenty-seven shell casings.

"Investigators are attempting to establish a motive for the shooting, and it is undetermined if the victims in the vehicle were the intended targets," Robertson said in a statement.       

No injuries were reported to be sustained.
