SOMERSET, NJ - The Franklin Township Police Department announced it is now accepting applications for residents to participate in its inaugural Citizen Academy class. The program is geared towards adults and business owners.

According to officials, the Academy is designed to introduce adults to the law enforcement community, teach what they do, and have an opportunity to meet their local officers.

Spots are limited and applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis and all attendees must submit to and pass a brief background check. Classes will begin May 5 and will be held Wednesdays from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm for 12 weeks.

Citizen Academy attendees will learn the following:

  • The process of a police report, criminal investigations, motor vehicle collision investigations and traffic stops.
  • They will also be able to familiarize themselves with the Internal Affairs process, Domestic Violence, Crime Scene Investigations and use of force.  
  • Participants can also choose to become CPR and First Aid certified during the Academy. 
  • Finally, they will be able to experience real life scenarios through the Firearms Training Simulator and finish with a night of practical exercises before graduating.   
  • Upon graduation, participants will have achieved a broader understanding of the inner working of the Franklin Township Police Department, a better understanding of the police profession and how they can help keep their community safe through crime prevention and community awareness.

Additionally, the Police Department has recently started Franklin Fit which is a CrossFit exercise program for youths, 12-19.

The program is ongoing and held every Wednesday from 5:30 – 6:45 pm at the CRB building, 935 Hamilton Street.  Kids get an opportunity to work out with their local officers while keeping themselves healthy.
