FRANKLIN PARK, NJ — Franklin Township’s newest elementary school is now officially open for business.

On Thursday, teachers and members of the board of education welcomed students and parents to the new Claremont Elementary School to mark the start of the 2018-2019 school year.

The school’s ‘Cool Cat’ mascots, Clare and Monte stood by waving and hugging the young learners as they entered the building for the first time.

“Everything is state of the art in this building and designed to accommodate all of the students,” said Madlen Rizkalla, the vice principal.

She said the new school’s principal, Nicole Bevere personally selected the color schemes and furniture to make sure they were developmentally appropriate for all of the students.

“We house a lot of the special education population in the district,” so there is also a sensory room which has special lighting and furniture, and a PreK-5 autism program, said Rizkalla.

In addition to the traditional classrooms, library and art room, Claremont’s facilities include a dance room, gym, music room and science lab to supplement student learning in grades PreK-5.

The new elementary school, located at 175 Claremont Road was the result of a referendum to address the growing student population in the community, said Rizkalla.

The addition of Claremont is expected to relieve some of the large class sizes at the other elementary schools which now include the 5th Grade.

“The numbers were getting large so this was needed,” said Rizkalla. “This is just exciting.”

District officials plan to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony in November after a number of construction projects are completed including finishing the floor in the gym and stocking the shelves with books in the library.

TAPinto Franklin Township is independently owned and operated by  Malik A. Lyons FHS Class of 93’ Graduate.
