SOMERSET, NJ - Due to recent destructive winter weather, Franklin Township’s Shade Tree Commission announces the extension of its annual tree sale offering bare root trees with tree guards at wholesale prices to Township residents.
Mid to late April is a great time to plant trees here in Franklin Township and now is the time to order your trees from the Franklin Township Shade Tree Commission’s Annual Tree Sale.
“Trees provide a wide variety of services to our Township. They absorb and filter stormwater, clean the air we breathe, shelter us from sun and wind, and provide habitat for wildlife”, said Sara Malone, the Commission’s Chair. “And the trees we’ve selected for the sale have beautiful flowers and great fall colors too!”
This year’s selection of ornamental and shade trees include ‘Firefall’ Maple, ‘Autumn Brilliance’ Serviceberry, Tulip Tree, Basswood (American Linden) and Eastern Redbud (substitutions may occur once our supplier confirms available stock). These native and native cultivars are adapted to local water, soil and climate conditions and are therefore more disease resistant and less likely to require pesticides or fertilizers.
Trees are generally six-foot bare root stock and are fairly easy to transport and plant. Complete planting instructions and planting advice are provided by the Shade Tree Commission.
Bob Hudak, the commission's annual tree sale coordinator, noted, “Among the many positive comments from residents who purchased trees at past sales, by far, most appreciated the convenience of our sale, yearly selections, and the helpful tree planting instructions on our website. We’ve also had repeat customers so impressed with how well their trees did, they came back each year to help complete their yards on a very affordable budget.”
A list of trees to be sold, pictures, descriptions and order information are available on the Commission’s website at www.franklintwpnj.org/shadetree. Orders are limited to two trees per variety per household (10 trees total) and must be postmarked by March 31, 2018. Trees will be available for pickup at the Township’s Convenience Center April 14th, 10 AM to noon.
