HILLSBOROUGH, NJ - Hundreds of volunteer firefighters from Hillsborough and surrounding towns worked for two hours to contain a fire at the Reckitt & Benckiser manufacturing facility, 799 Route 206 Monday afternoon.
Four alarms were called in after the initial report of the 1:37 p.m. fire.
Heavy black smoke drifted across the state highway, slowing down traffic.
Two firefighters were treated for heat exposure; there were no other injuries reported to firefighters or employees who work in the building, where hygiene, health and nutritional products are manufactured, including coveted Lysol disinfectant, in demand since the COVID-19 pandemic focused attention on the need for cleanliness and sanitation.
The fire does not appear to be suspicious in origin, according to Hillsborough Police Sgt. Stephen Nowacki, but remains under investigation by township police and the township Bureau of Fire Safety.
Responding to the fire were Hillsborough Police; Hillsborough fire units 36,37,38 & 48; Montgomery Fire Companies 1 & 2; Manville Fire Department; Somerville Fire Department; Somerset Fire Company; Elizabeth Avenue Fire Company; Rocky Hill Fire Department; Millstone Valley Fire Company; Bradley Gardens Fire Company; Green Knoll Fire Company; Robert Wood Johnson EMS; Flemington/Raritan Rescue Squad; Montgomery EMS; Somerset County HAZMAT; Hillsborough Township Office of Emergency Management and Somerset County Office of Emergency Management.
