NEW BRUNSWICK – Destination Dogs, the eatery specializing in hot dogs that opened in the city about six years ago, will be featured on the Travel Channel show “Food Paradise” next month, a spokeswoman for the show said.
A film crew from the channel spent an entire day filming at the restaurant about a month ago.
One advantage in the restaurant’s favor is its close proximity to Rutgers University and all the college students, according to Christine Shuler, executive producer, Travel Channel. It also helped that Destination Dogs has a presence on social media.
“We were looking into where you can get great comfort food near campus, and found Destination Dogs by checking out talk and photos on social media,” Shuler said. “We found they had a creative hot dog menu and unique ingredients. It was a match made in Food Paradise,” Shuler said.
She said Food Paradise searches for ”the food everyone want to eat around the country.”
Jimmy Cronk, chef, creator and one of the owners of the restaurant, said he had been inspired by Travel Channel show more than 10 years ago. He recalls that he was watching a show called “Hot Dog Paradise,” and thinking “I could do better than that.”
Earlier this year he got a call from the channel offering to send a crew to New Brunswick.
This will be Cronk’s latest appearance on television. He has previously been featured on other networks, and has appeared on television twice to cook during a live broadcast.
The segment about the restaurant is scheduled to appear on the Travel Channel on April 15, a spokeswoman for the channel said.
