UNION, NJ – Union police have released additional details about the shooting at the RTSP gun range Saturday night.
Police say an employee called 9-1-1 at 7:22 Saturday night to report that a man had shot himself at the firing range. Two Union officers arrived on scene and performed first aid. Additional medical personnel responded and performed first aid on the man, who was transported to University Hospital. The man remains in critical condition.
Detectives say preliminary findings indicate that the man and two friends went to the range for target shooting. The victim fired a few shots downrange and then put the gun to his head and fired the weapon. The initial conclusion from police is that this was a suicide attempt, not an accident or the result of horseplay, but detectives are continuing their investigation.
The shooting range is located at 2348 Route 22 East. Police say there was no danger to anyone else and no one else at the range was injured.
