SOMERVILLE, NJ - Franklin Township's Police Department will team up with law enforcement agencies throughout Somerset and Hunterdon County and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NJTSA) to remind the public "Super Bowl Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk," according to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson.

Law officials say drunk driving can be deadly. A driver is considered alcohol-impaired with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher, but even a small amount of alcohol can impair judgment and reaction times enough to make driving unsafe. According to NHTSA, in 2015, 10,265 people killed in motor vehicle crashes in the United States that year were killed in crashes that involved an impaired driver.

“If you plan on consuming alcohol this Super Bowl, remember to pass the keys to a designated driver to help your family and friends get home safely," Robertson said.  "Drunk driving only leads to disaster and tragedy and with multiple taxi services/rideshare programs available at the touch a fingertip via a smart phone, there is no excuse to be driving under the influence.”

According to Robertson, law enforcement agencies in Hunterdon and Somerset Counties will conduct supplemental patrols on the lookout for impaired drivers this Sunday. Funding for the patrols is from a New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic grant. Additionally, specially trained officers will be available to assist with drivers that are under the influence of drugs rather than alcohol. It is strongly recommended that fans that are impaired secure a safe ride home by designating a sober driver, using public transportation, or calling a taxi or rideshare program.

NHTSA has a SafeRide mobile app, that can be used as a resource to help people find a sober ride home, by identifying their location and helping to call a taxi or friend to pick them up.

Designated sober drivers can also tweet @NHTSAgov during Super Bowl LI to be featured on their Wall of Fame.
