MORRISTOWN, NJ - Atlantic Health System’s Morristown Medical Center announced it recently implanted its 100th Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD), which treats patients who are in end-stage heart-failure. Morristown Medical Center is one of 60 hospitals in the nation to receive the Gold Seal of Approval™ Disease-Specific Care Certification from The Joint Commission for its ventricular assist device program.
“We are incredibly proud that our Heart Failure team—which we call our Heart Success team—is able to provide this treatment option for patients with late-stage heart failure, many who would otherwise not be candidates for heart transplants or who wouldn’t survive transplants,” said Dr. James Slater, surgical director, Heart Success Program, Morristown Medical Center. “These devices allow patients to enjoy a quality of life they hadn’t known for many years.”
Patients with end-stage heart failure—many waiting for a heart transplant—can experience severe shortness of breath, sleep problems, chronic coughing, fatigue, swelling, and lack of appetite. LVAD devices, which are implanted outside of the patient’s heart, help the left portion of the heart pump better, allowing more blood to flow through the heart to the rest of the body and improving these debilitating symptoms. For some patients, this can help keep their hearts pumping until they are able to receive a transplant. For others, it is a lifesaving long-term option.
A multidisciplinary team of specialized surgeons, cardiologists, registered nurses, nurse practitioners, dieticians and pharmacists, work together to provide comprehensive heart care for both the patient and family before, during and for years following device implant. Since 2008, the VAD program at Morristown Medical Center has provided the community and region access to the latest technologies, including the HeartMate 3™ Left Ventricular Assist Device which recently received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for destination therapy, which provides long-term support in patients who are not candidates for transplant.
Morristown Medical Center has long been recognized as a leader in cardiology and cardiac surgery, earning numerous awards and recognitions for its cardiovascular services. Notably,

Recipient of the American College of Cardiology's ACTION Registry®-GWTG™ Platinum Performance Achievement Award for improvement in the treatment of heart attack patients.
