Murdered Woman Identifed as Mother of Stabbing Suspect

BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The homicide victim in Monday's stabbing in a home on Washington Valley Road in Martinsville has been identified as Helen Litwornia, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael Robertson.

Robertson said the 61-year-old victim was the mother of defendant Michael Litwornia.

According to Robertson, an autopsy was performed by the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner's Office, and the cause of death was found to be sharp force trauma to the neck, classified as a homicide.

The investigation is continuing.

Litwornia, 27, of Martinsville, was charged with first-degree homicide in his mother's death, as well as second degree aggravated assault in connection with the stabbing of his father.

Robertson said Litwornia was taken into custody after a standoff with the Somerset County SWAT team; he was suffering from self-inflicted wounds and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. He is under police guard and will be lodged at the Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing once he is released.

Bridgewater Police: Avoid Mall for Ongoing Police Investigation

UPDATE: According to a Nixle alert from the Bridgewater Township Police Department at 9 p.m., the investigation at the mall has been completed, and the mall will be resuming normal business operations.

Police emphasized that there is no immediate threat to the public and no injuries were reported.
