NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - This March, in honor of Women’s History Month, for the eighth consecutive year, The New Brunswick Jazz Project, is devoting the month to performances featuring women band leaders. NBJP regularly includes women artists in their roster of regularly scheduled weekly events, but during March - NBJP pays honors the spirit of the women who were jazz pioneers. Women like trumpeters Clora Bryant and Valaida Snow and guitarist/bassist Carline Ray who despite remarkable talent and drive, struggled to claim a place on the bandstand. Women are still a minority in the jazz world, but thanks in no small part to those who paved the way, today there is a greater presence and much wider recognition of women in jazz.

Our 2018 Women in Jazz Series will feature jazz veterans who have performed for every NBJP March Women in Jazz since 2011, like organist Akiko Tsuruga and drummer Sylvia Cuenca, as well as new lionesses- bassist Mimi Jones, saxophonists Nicole Glover and Erena Terakubo, as well as jazz vocalists Luba Mason and Philadelphia’s Najwa Parkins. Eighteen performance events will take place at The Hyatt, Inc American Bar & Kitchen, George Street State Ale House, and Due Mari-all of which are located in downtown New Brunswick.

Since April 2010, the New Brunswick Jazz Project has been dedicated to sustaining the legacy of this uniquely American music form by keeping the music accessible and available. New Brunswick is, and has been for many years, a cultural hub, but there had been no regular opportunities to enjoy jazz locally for more than 10 years. NBJP hosts multiple, FREE, jazz performances weekly and since its inception has presented over 1200 free jazz performances featuring acclaimed musicians. Every September The New Brunswick Jazz Project co-presents the Central Jersey Jazz Festival in downtown New Brunswick along with Flemington and Somerville in their respective towns.
