PISCATAWAY, NJ – A local Piscataway boy who lost his father to pancreatic cancer two years ago isn’t letting his heartache get the best of him.

Mikey Wojcik, 11 is instead collecting donations in his dad’s memory so he can buy new toys for children who themselves are fighting cancer, an effort that he says, will put smiles on their faces after enduring rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Mikey, who plays football for a township youth league is using his mother, Indira’s Facebook page to share his story and a few photos of the many toys he has already purchased and donated to the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, which also treats pediatric cancer patients.

He is more than half-way to his goal of raising $500, posting:

“You have cancer. Now see, if you are a parent, those are the last three words that you would want to hear about your child. Or for that matter anyone in your family.

I remember hearing those words about my dad. And that was the worst feeling in the world. They diagnosed him with pancreatic cancer in June of 2012.

That's when his battle with cancer started. From the beginning we knew he was not going to give up easily. He was not going to let cancer hold him back from having fun with us.

In the summer of 2013 we took a flight out to California and road-tripped back to New Jersey. That was one of the best times with my dad. My dad was my hero and he taught me how not to give up easily and to always fight hard.

All through chemo and radiation, he was always supporting my sister and me at all of our sports and other activities. My mom had to give him shots at our house every weekend. To see children having to go through that is so painful to watch or even to hear about.

On January 21, 2015 my dad passed away after two and a half years of fight. I remember it like it was yesterday. My mom left the room for a minute and he passed with me looking right over him.  It was a heartbreaking moment in my life. He never got to see me turn ten and hit the big double digits.

I would never want to see a kid pass away from cancer. But I know kids are diagnosed every day.

So even if you could make a donation between $1 and $10 it would be helpful and very appreciative. For all you know, your dollar could put a smile on a kid’s face.

With your kind donation I will be buying kids little toys to give them after treatment. Something they can keep and play with and will put smiles on their faces. My goal is to raise $500 and once that goal is met I will go shopping with my mom. I will update how the fundraising is going frequently and once I make the purchase I will post a picture of the items and the receipt.

Thank you all for taking the time to read this and hopefully you will donate and share this on your page.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation can send cash and checks to: Mikey Wojcik, PO Box 152, Piscataway NJ 08855.
