NEW BRUNSWICK - Authorities today identified one of two people killed in a weekend fire as a 30-year-old homeless man.
Police said Alexander Merino-Martinez was one of the two men believed to be squatters who were found in a boarded-up house on Seaman Street that was discovered burning about 9:50 p.m. Saturday.
Firefighters pulled Merino-Martinez and another man out of the house, and the two victims were taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in the city where each of them was pronounced dead.
Police have not yet positively identified the second man, Capt. J.T. Miller said in a statement Wednesday. Officers are continuing to investigate to determine the name of that victim, Miller said.
Firefighters believe the blaze was started accidentally. Two city firefighters suffered minor injuries in battling the fire, police said.
Authorities are asking anyone with additional information about the fire to call police at (732) 745-5217.
