BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The Boston Red Sox have purchased the contract of Somerset Patriots All-Star outfielder Justin Pacchioli.

He becomes the 12th Patriots' player to be signed by a Major League organization during the 2017 season.

To fill Pacchioli's roster spot, the Patriots have signed outfielder D'Vontrey Richardson, a 7-year minor league veteran who most recently played in the Can-Am League.

In his first season with the Somerset Patriots and in the Atlantic League, Pacchioli was named an All-Star and was hitting .281 with a team-high 61 runs and 35 stolen bases at the time of his contract being purchased. He also had 84 hits, 30 RBI, and was among the league leaders in stolen bases (3rd), stolen base percentage (1st - .946), and on base percentage (5th - .384).

Before coming to Somerset, the 24 year-old took off the 2016 season for personal reasons after spending his first year in professional baseball in the San Diego Padres organization.

A 10th-round draft pick by the Padres in 2015, Pacchioli played in 58 games with short-season Tri-City that year and posted a .245 average with 14 RBI and 19 stolen bases. His 19 steals led the team and ranked seventh in the Northwest League that season.

The Easton, Pa. native enjoyed a noteworthy collegiate career at Lehigh University. There, Pacchioli ranks as the program’s all-time leader in stolen bases (69), fifth in program history in batting (.344) and sixth in triples (8). He also set the single-season stolen base record (31) in his senior year and is one of just nine Mountain Hawks to be named as a three-time All Patriot League selection (2013-15).

Richardson enters his first season with the Somerset Patriots and first in the Atlantic League.

The Georgia native was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the fifth round of the 2009 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Florida State University. Richardson spent his first four seasons with the Milwaukee organization, including a stint with Double-A Huntsville in 2014.

While splitting time between the Laredo Lemurs of the American Association and the New Jersey Jackals of the Can-Am League in 2015, Richardson hit .313 with eight home runs and 45 runs batted in over 84 total games.

Richardson followed up his 2015 season with a strong 2016 campaign with New Jersey. Over 97 games, he hit .310 with 67 RBI and 25 stolen bases as the team’s everyday centerfielder.

The 29-year old has gotten off to an impressive start in 2017 as well, hitting a combined .305 with four home runs, 24 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 67 total games between New Jersey and the Quebec Capitales (Can-Am League).

Richardson brings impressive athleticism with him to Somerset. During his time at Florida State, the six-foot-one outfielder also served as a backup quarterback on the Seminole’s football team behind former NFL quarterback Christian Ponder.

Over his seven-year career, Richardson owns a .284 career batting average with 31 home runs, 280 RBI, 351 runs scored and 107 stolen bases in 611 career games.

Other Patriots to have had their contracts purchased by a Major League organization this season include pitchers Logan Darnell (Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers), Jeremy Bleich (Los Angeles Dodgers), Tyler Cloyd and Ryan Kelly (Seattle Mariners), Aaron Laffey (Arizona Diamondbacks), Vin Mazzaro (Cincinnati Reds), and Mitch Atkins (New York Mets), along with outfielders Jerry Sands (San Francisco Giants) and Christian Marrero (Philadelphia Phillies), and infielder Tyler Bortnick (Milwaukee Brewers).
