SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – Thursday night’s car crash on Route 1 turned fatal today as a Texas woman succumbed to her injuries, officials said at noon.
At least one other person was seriously injured in the collision and is undergoing surgery today, they said.
The accident took place at 9:10 p.m. Thursday night when a grey sedan carrying a family of four from Texas tried to make a left turn across Route 1 south onto New Road, police said.
The grey sedan hit a white sedan, with two occupants, that was traveling north on Route 1 head-on.
The crash impact spun both cars around, sending the white sedan across the lanes of New Road, and the grey sedan crushed up against the concrete barrier in the left northbound lane of Route 1.
Six people were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick by ambulances from South Brunswick, Plainsboro and North Brunswick, police said.
The Texas family traveled from upstate New York to visit relatives on New Road east of Route 1, police said.
Police have not released any of the identities of those involved at this time.
The investigation into the crash continues with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office taking the lead, police said.
