The Somerset County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program gives residents and farmers a legal and cost-free way to dispose of unwanted household items that cannot be disposed of in the regular trash.

Household hazardous waste includes: banned or outdated pesticides, antifreeze, transmission fluid, brake fluids, wet-cell car batteries, motor oil (2-gallon maximum), used oil filters, fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent lights, ammonia-based cleaners, gasoline, kerosene, mercury switches, mercury, helium balloon tanks, fire extinguishers, used cooking oil, oil-based and latex-based paints, pool chemicals, barbecue propane tanks and rechargeable and button-cell batteries. For more information on types and quantities of materials accepted at Household Hazardous Waste events, contact the Somerset County Division of Solid Waste Management at (908) 231-7031 or email:

Somerset County Sheriff Frank J Provenzano and the Somerset County Solid Waste Management Division invite county residents to take advantage of the RxMission Drive-In/Drop-Off medicine-collection program, which is held in conjunction with scheduled Household Hazardous Waste drop-off events, rain or shine.  Residents can drop off medications at as many of the Household Hazardous Waste drop-off events as they wish to safely dispose of unwanted or outdated prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications from their homes.  Sheriff's officers are on hand to accept the medications.  Click here:  More Information on Medical Waste.

NO tires, electronic waste (computers and televisions), infectious waste, gas cylinders, smoke alarms, unknown or unidentified material, 55 gallon drums, dioxins, PCBs, carbon monoxide detectors, explosives, air conditioners, dehumidifiers or any items that contain a refrigerant, Pentachlorophenol and 2, 4, 5-TP (Silvex), are accepted. No commercial vehicles are allowed.
