BRIDGEWATER, NJ - The Somerset Regional Animal Shelter, in Bridgewater, is urgently looking for homes for its cats and kittens.

According to a release from the shelter, the population surges throughout the summer during kitten breeding season, and so the shelter is launching a special promotion to help increase cat and kitten adoptions. During the month of July, all cats and kittens that over 6 months old will be reduced to 50 percent off of adoption fees.

The adoption fee for cats will be $63, and the adoption fee for kittens over 6 months will be $75.

"We're nearing capacity and need adopters now," Rose Tropeano-Digilio, assistant manager for the shelter, said in the release. "Our intake of cats has risen by nearly 50 percent since this past January. We're overcrowded."

Shelter officials are urging members of the public to adopt a cat or kitten if they can provide a safe and loving environment for a new pet. The adoption fee includes spaying or neutering and full vaccinations. In addition, there is also microchipping for permanent identification with lifetime registration and 30 days of free pet insurance.

The feline population at the shelter has soared since January, according to the release. Most are kittens, and many more are excepted since "kitten season" usually lasts until the weather cools in the late fall.

Fortunately, the release said, most of the kittens in foster care were placed with volunteers, but now they are being returned to the shelter to find permanent homes.

To help, people can consider adopting a pet from a shelter; spay or neuter a pet to prevent adding to the surplus pet population; volunteer for foster care; or make a donation to the shelter at www.srasnj.org/donate.
