ATLANTA, GA – South Brunswick Vikings alumnus Mohamed Sanu is heading to Houston, Texas, for Super Bowl LI as his Atlanta Falcons destroyed the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship Game Sunday, 44-21.

“It’s unreal,” Sanu said during a televised interview after the game. “I just want to hug all of my teammates.”

The former Vikings and Rutgers football star wide receiver said the team worked hard all year and has grown closer together during the season.

“I am grateful to be part of this team,” he said. “We are going to grind hard this week and try to enjoy ourselves and this (victory).”

Sanu made his presence known early at the Falcons Georgia Dome home when he took a two-yard shovel pass from quarterback Matt Ryan in for the first touchdown, beginning Atlanta’s scoring onslaught.

“Mohamed was the guy early,” Ryan said during his post-game press conference. “He made some really good plays for us, he’s done that all year.”

Sanu, 27, had five receptions for 52 yards including the touchdown and fielded two onside kick attempts late by Green Bay to aid in the win.

In his fifth year in the NFL, he pulled in 59 catches for 653 yards and four touchdowns during the season.

He graduated South Brunswick High School in 2008 and then went to Rutgers University in New Brunswick where he shined as a wide receiver, setting several school records during his time there.

Sanu was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the third round of the 2012 draft and spent the next four years with that team in the shadow of star receiver A.J. Green.

His tenure in Ohio saw four first round playoff berths, but the Bengals never got out of the first round during that time.

He became a free agent and joined the Falcons in 2016.

“He brings energy to it when he makes plays,” Ryan said. “The guys feed off of that, and that was certainly the case today.”

Sanu and the Falcons now head to Super Bowl LI in Houston Texas on Feb. 5 where they will face perennial championship opponents, the New England Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady.

The Brady bunch decimated the Pittsburgh Steelers 36-17 in Sunday night’s AFC Championship Game in Foxborough, Massachusetts.

Since going pro, Sanu remains a fixture in the local community, returning home to cheer on his alma maters whenever his schedule allows and runs a free football camp at SBHS during the summer for local kids.
