The Center School, located in Somerset, NJ, is a private, non-profit, state-accredited facility for bright, learning-disabled students, ages 5-21.
The Center School’s transition program provides unpaid, structured learning experiences designed specifically for each individual student, 18 years of age and older. The Structured Learning Experiences are structured, supervised activities that take place in various locations/businesses within the community. SLE’s provide career exploration possibilities, develop employability skills, help clarify career goals, while paving the way between school and employment or further education and training.
The Center School’s Transition Coordinator, Barbara L. Breeman, searches for community placements that meet every student’s interests, strengths, and capabilities.
Many of the participating job sites for the 2016-2017 school year, include: Marshall’s, Carlo’s Pizza, (Bridgewater) BeneFIT Physical Therapy, Manville Library, Optim Eyes, Northern Nurseries, KMart, Walgreens, and The Center School’s very own, non-profit store, Thrifts and Gifts, located in Somerville.
While on the job site, the students perform many activities based on their level of ability, understanding, and successful completion of given tasks/responsibilities, appropriate work related interpersonal skills, motivation, and positive attitude.
