SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ – Talk about making waves.
Police discovered an apparently abandoned 37-foot yacht on the shoulder of Route 1 south near Beekman Road around 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon, officials said.
Officers found the “Maraliya” with blocks holding up the bow and two tripods holding up either end of its stern on the shoulder of the road.
Police Capt. Jim Ryan said the department did not get any calls, even five hours later at 7 p.m., alerting them that the boat, which did have an “oversize load” banner along its rear, was left “aground” on Route 1.
The banner could mean the boat was being transported on Route 1 by a tractor-trailer before being left off on the roadside.
Ryan said the boat may have been out of Larchmont, New York, but it remains a maritime mystery as to how it came to be on the side of the busy roadway during the middle of the day.
According to Ryan, a similar new boat sells for around $500,000.
He said that two motorists crashed on Route 1 due to rubber-necking at the boat while workers loaded it onto a truck for towing.
Police are now looking at video from cameras around the scene to try and find the driver of the truck initially transporting the boat.
Anyone with information that could help police locate the driver or owner of the “Maraliya” is asked to call South Brunswick Police at (732) 329-4646.
