FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ - So far it has been a major inconvenience to the commuters of Franklin Township, but the good news is the project is on schedule.

Somerset County Department of Public Works, Principal Bridge Engineer, Brian W. Maurer, told TAPinto Franklin Township that the project is on target for completion.

"South Middlebush Road (CR 615) closure was implemented on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 for start of bridge and utility work", said Maurer. "Duration of the road closure is approximately 3 months.  Bridge and roadway reconstruction work continues to be in progress.  Completion of the bridge/roadway work and reopening of South Middlebush Road is on target for on-time completion in mid-September, weather permitting."

The school year for Franklin Township Public Schools is set for Sept. 13.

Original Story:

South Middlebush Road will be closed for the next three months between Skillmans Lane and Jacques Lane starting on or around June 28, for bridge replacement.

During the road closure, the bridge over Six Mile Run will not be passable and drivers should seek alternate routes. Traffic delays in the area are expected on surrounding roadways, especially during rush hour.

A map of the impacted area and detour routes can be viewed here. Even though detours will be posted, commuters are encouraged to start planning alternate routes.

The road is expected to re-open when the school year starts, however, the project is dependent on weather.

Details of the project can be found below, courtesy of the Somerset County website:

The existing South Middlebush Road Bridge over Six Mile Run is a 2-lane heavily traveled single-span structure consisting of glue-laminated timber deck panels supported by stone and concrete abutments with concrete aprons.  The superstructure dates from 1981 and the abutments were built in three construction episodes, dating from prior to 1918, in 1918, and in 1981.  Traffic studies performed in 2011 shows an average daily traffic of 15,500 vehicles.

Somerset County is proposing to replace the South Middlebush Road Bridge over Six Mile Run with a 28-foot long single-span structure comprised of stress laminated glue-laminated timber superstructure with timber railings on concrete abutments with stone veneer similar to the current structure.  The roadway width will be widened by 6' at the bridge to carry two 11-foot lanes with 4-foot shoulders, and tapered to meet the existing roadway width at each approach.  The proposed bridge replacement will remove the bridge from the functional obsolete and scour critical lists.

Full roadway closure of South Middlebush Road will be necessary for the replacement of the bridge.  A posted detour will utilize State Route 27 for the north/south direction.  The road closure will extend for approximately 3 months.  Incentive/disincentive clauses have been included in the contract that will likely expedite the completion timeline.

This construction project is funded by FY2016 NJDOT Local Bridges Future Needs grant and County Funds.
