Original Story:

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP, NJ - Qiora Rollins of Franklin Township will be honored this Saturday at Pines Manor in Edison as "Athlete Of The Year" by the USA Track and Field-NJ Committee.

Rollins was selected by the committee as NJ Junior Olympian representative for girls sprint in the 9 -10-year-old age group.

"In 2014 I was 8 years old when I was first Honored by the USATF-NJ State Committee," Qiora Rollins said.

"I had no idea that I would enjoy running so much and be awarded for my hard work. It became a fun challenge.  I just wanted to get better and better!  I learned very quickly how important it was to rise to the occasion and to leave it all on the field at every qualifying, state, regional and national track meet.

"When I was not selected that very next year in 2015, I became very excited and determined to reclaim the title as the "Athlete Of The Year for 2016" for the State of NJ. During a Track season, each qualifying meet will advance you to the next one according to your overall performance.

"I just wanted to perform my best every time I heard the official say, runners take your mark! In order to win, I had to run my P.R. (personal record) ...and I did it I ran my best time in the 100 meters in 13.9 seconds and in the 200 meters in 28.46 seconds!  All our hard work had paid off!"

Rollins has a twin sister Adriana and both run track and are 5th grade Gold Honor Roll students attending Sampson G. Smith Intermediate School. The Rollin twins have also been members of Franklin Township's Eye Catchers All Girls Track Club since 2012.

"Sports is a temporary high and education is a high for life," Nicole Rollins  (Qiora and Adriana's mother) said.  "Sports can open many doors but education will allow you to strive valiantly toward success!"

In addition to excelling at sports and academics, the sisters are also members of the New Jersey Orators (Somerset Chapter), and earned top point medals of excellence for their group and were awarded a $50 endowment. They performed as a duo in the categories of oral presentation of prose and drama. Adriana was selected to present her oration in front of a room of 300 guests at the end of the competition.

"At first, I was surprised and excited all at the same time," Adriana Rollins said. "As I was walking to the stage I was very nervous.

"Once I began acting out and reciting my pieces,  I became more comfortable and my nerves began to turn into confidence!  "Once I was able to make my audience laugh, I knew that they were enjoying it and it became a lot of fun!  I loved making everyone laugh or smile!

"Our Team won the Overall District Trophy last Spring, and my sister and I were part of making that happen for our Somerset Chapter.  It was Awesome!"

Both sisters will also represent their school later this year in the 43rd Annual Colgate Women's Games at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY.
