It’s a New Year and 2020 has left us all with a story to tell. 2020 allowed me to start a new career path and step into ownership of Styles Books LLC. Styles Books LLC is a publishing company that creates bilingual children’s books and novels. We pride ourselves in creating books that celebrate diversity, community, self-esteem, empowerment, positive relationship development at home and school, and help kids cope with tough circumstances.
Before I share my experience, let me take some time to introduce myself. My name is Judy John-Styles, CEO of Styles Books LLC, Author, P-3 Certified teacher. I have my degree in Psychology and Early Childhood Education. My degree has helped me navigate experiences as an educator in all-inclusion classrooms, early childhood classes and working with children with disabilities.
This year I have written and published three books in six months and thus become an expert at the self-publishing process. My first book, Mommy, why can’t I go to school? was inspired by the pandemic-induced shut down in March. The world experienced drastic change, as did my family and I. We lost a few people in our family within two weeks, my children were suddenly homeschooled, and my husband and I were working from home. Mommy, why can’t I go to school? is a bilingual children’s book that follows a parent and child engaging in an open conversation about how to navigate the sudden change in routine that the global pandemic has caused. It answers questions about what a pandemic is, how to keep safe and clean at home and in the community, and how to adapt to learning at home. My book provides an easy and fun way for parents to explain this unexpected disruption to their young children and teach them how to protect themselves and others from the virus. In the first week of publication, I sold over 150 copies.
My first book then inspired my 12-year-old daughter to become an author. We wrote a book entitled Mommy, why am I different? which was published in December. My daughter shared some concerns she experienced in school and how she felt about herself. Her heart was to empower young girls to love themselves and let them know it is okay to be different. We also added a coloring book and journal as a third book under our company.
Having started this amazing journey, my heart is to show others how to publish their stories. I have learned that there are so many people who have written several books but have no idea how to start. I created a step-by-step process on how to move your story from an idea to a product to share with others. This process shares resources such as editors, illustrators, book formatters, and self-publishing platforms, to make it as easy as possible for you to click the publish button and share your creation with the world. I will be hosting my super affordable workshop on January 9th at 2:30pm. Let 2021 be the year that brings life to the list of books you have prepared to share with the world.
