SOMERSET, NJ - Franklin Township Public Schools will conserve five school days by utilizing "Emergency Closing Days" should the district require an emergency closing due to Coronavirus (COVID-19), according to a letter posted on the district website Wednesday nightpdf

An "Emergency Closing Day" is defined as a day when schools and district offices are closed and the day does not count toward the 180-day school in-session requirement, according to Ravally.

"Typically, when the district does not utilize all the days built into the school calendar for emergency closings, specific days are given back and students and instructional staff do not have to report [to school] on those days," Ravally said in his letter. "The earliest of those give-back days would have come up around our spring recess. However, we will not be giving those days back at this time."

Schools will be closed from Monday, April 6 through Monday, April 13 for spring recess this year.  Ravally says he anticipates families will be notified by mid-May if unused "Emergency Closing Days" will be given back at the end of the school year.

Administrators and faculty are also working on a "Continuity of Instruction Plan" to help ensure the district can educate students remotely if the Department of Health calls for limited access to schools, according to Ravally.

Families will be provided more details upon approval of the district's submitted plan, which is expected by early next week, according to Ravally.

"To help facilitate that planning, we have posted a technology access survey online that is accessible through our main webpage and we are also making that survey available via a paper copy," Ravally said in his letter. "The data collected from this survey will inform us about at-home electronic device and Internet availability."

If the district's instruction plan is approved, any remote learning days would count towards the 180-day school calendar year.
