Over 150 bags of free groceries expected to be given away while maintaining social distancing
SOMERSET, NJ - The nonprofit SALT Foundation will be holding its fourth “Community Love” drive-through food pantry event for the needy on Wednesday, April 8, 2020 from 1 pm to 4 pm at the Somerset Community Action Program on 155 Pierce Street, Somerset, NJ 08873.
Volunteers will be giving away pre-packed shopping bags filled with a range of healthy and hearty free fruits, vegetables, breads, and other food. The event is being structured so that all volunteers and recipients can all maintain social distancing.
SALT Foundation has previously held three other drive-through food pantry events at other locations in Somerset County, distributing over 300 bags of food to local residents and families. SALT Foundation has also held two events in Jersey City in partnership with the acclaimed new restaurant, Freetown Road Project.
SALT Foundation gathers food that would otherwise be thrown away from a variety of generous grocery stores, including Wegmans in Princeton and Trader Joe’s locations in Hoboken and Brick, and then distributes that food to homeless shelters, food pantries, soup kitchens, women’s shelters, community groups, churches, and special events like this one.
“Thanks to the generosity of Trader Joe’s and Wegmans, we are reaching so many people with the sustenance they need, especially during this incredibly challenging time of the COVID-19 pandemic and its social restrictions,” said Claudia Wheeler, SALT Foundation founder. “During this time, we rely more than ever on the support of our neighbors and community partners like Somerset Community Action Program, who is generously hosting this event.”
For the past decade, Wheeler has collected and delivered over 64,000 pounds of fruits, vegetables, grains, and other food products to dozens of organizations and thousands of families, driving over 75,000 miles in the process. She is also a United States Navy veteran and a public schoolteacher. To learn more about SALT Foundation, please visit www.TheSALTFoundationInc.org.
