PISCATAWAY, NJ – The date has been set. The new Piscataway Community Center will celebrate its grand opening ceremony on Saturday, May 16, 2020.

Mayor Brian Wahler made the announcement in a special Groundhog Day video where he visited Green Acres Park on Sunday to see if Piscataway Pete saw his shadow indicating whether or not Spring is on its way.

Instead, Pete left a note in his burrow letting everyone know the long-awaited $34 million dollar facility will be open for business in time for the Memorial Day holiday, the unofficial start of summer.

In addition to the indoor three-pool aquatics center and outdoor spray park, the facility will also feature a culture arts component, complete with a 100-seat black box performance theater, Wahler told TAPinto in a recent tour of the facility which is still under construction.

Along with an 8,000 square foot state of the art fitness area, basketball courts and elevated running track, there will also be a Zumba exercise room, a childcare center, meeting room space, an electronic golf driving range and a teen center.

“We’re going to have everything you could possibly think of in the teen center for the kids, including gaming stations and a homework area,” said Wahler.

A command center is also being built where the Office of Emergency Management will operate during times of public crisis such as a hurricane.

“This is such a big building that it’s an official evacuation site,” said Wahler listing how about 300 cots will be stored for emergency use along with hermitically sealed blankets, pillows, and Army type ready-made meals.

He thanked the mayor of Virginia Beach for his list of suggestions on what to include in a community center this large.

“We were able to incorporate their suggestions into our design plan such as extra electric outlets, more ceiling fans in the fitness area and more floor drains by the pool area. It’s more minor things, including have a remote to operate the bleachers and the dividers in the gym,” Wahler listed.

The YMCA has been selected to operate the center, with membership rates and registration procedures expected to be announced sometime this month.

For those who are keeping track, neither Punxsutawney Phil nor Staten Island Chuck saw their shadows. So, as the continued above average temperatures might indicate, Spring will be here before we know it.
