PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers University Police are investigating a report of an aggressive coyote that may have bitten a man along the Rutgers Preserve on Livingston Campus in Piscataway early Thursday morning, resulting in it being closed.

Rutgers police officials notified the college community and issued the following alert via their Facebook page and other means.

"The Rutgers Police Department is currently investigating a report of an aggressive coyote in the area of the Rutgers Preserve on Livingston Campus at Rutgers University-New Brunswick. This incident occurred on Thursday, November 14th, 2019 at approximately 4am. The victim, who is affiliated, indicated he was walking on the footpath of Avenue E in the area of Hospital Road when the coyote ran out of the tree line and bit him. The victim was treated for his injuries at a local area hospital and was released. The Rutgers Police Department has increased patrols in the area and within the Preserve.

The Rutgers Police Department reminds you to avoid contact with stray or wild animals. If you are bitten or scratched by a wild or stray animal, we advise you to seek medical treatment immediately and report any exposures to the Rutgers Police Department at 732-932-7211. The following tips can help prevent or minimize the injury by an animal and/or other wildlife:

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE OR DISTURB THE ANIMAL OR WILDLIFE!
Tell others to vacate the area if a dangerous animal may still be nearby.
If approached by the animal, make yourself as big and loud as possible.
Do not turn your back on the animal.

They later issued an update closing the Rutgers Preserve for the investigation:

“The Rutgers Police Department is currently working with the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife to further investigate the report of an aggressive coyote in the area of the Rutgers Preserve on Livingston Campus at Rutgers University-New Brunswick which was reported to have occurred on November 14th, 2019 at 4am. Until further notice the Rutgers Preserve will be closed to all affiliated and non-affiliated individuals.”
