NJ Lawmaker Stands Up for Painted Blue Line Police Tributes on Roadways

Hillsborough Township dedicated its Thin Blue Line police tribute in front of the municipal building on Oct. 24.
State Assemblyman Erik Peterson, R-23rd is sponsor of a resolution opposing the FHA ruling to paint over the Thin Blue Line police tributes.

TRENTON, NJ – Assemblyman Erik Peterson, R-23rd introduced a resolution in the State Assembly Tuesday objecting to a recent Federal Highway Administration ruling that would require towns to paint over the honorary blue lines in front of police departments, municipal buildings, and down main streets intended to support local law enforcement. 

“It seems that, yet again, the federal government is out of touch with everyday Americans,” Peterson said. “A simple show of support for the men and women of law enforcement has needlessly been brought into question.”

The FHA ruling notes that blue markings are reserved for designating handicap parking spaces in accordance with the international symbol of accessibility parking.

“I’m very confident that drivers are not going to mistake the blue lines down the middle of the road for handicapped parking zones. We need to let the towns decide what is best here,” Peterson added. 

Hillsborough Township dedicated its thin blue line on Veterans Way in front of the Peter J.Biondi Municipal Building on Oct. 24.

"This Thin Blue Line will serve as a reminder to all residents and visitors to the Hillsborough Municipal Complex that our Police Officers, who are called to our aid, are a vital part of our community," said then-Mayor Frank DelCore during the ceremony. "It is a symbol of our appreciation and thanks to them for their service to our community."

Peterson’s measure disapproves of the FHA determination that the thin blue line between double-yellow centerline marking does not comply with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways.
