PORTVILLE, NY — Cub Scout Pack 631 will hold a 5K color crawl run Saturday to bring the community together through fitness while raising funds for future scouting activities.

Participants will meet at 49 N. Main St. in the Little League Park and run along the sidewalks of Maple Avenue, Depot Street, Temple Street and Brooklyn Street until they reach Elm Street, which will bring them back to the park.

The route will feature five color stations and all skill levels and ages are encouraged to participate.

The event costs $30 plus $2.50 for sign-up fee, with online registrations ending Friday at 11:59 p.m. on the event website. Final registrations will begin at 10 a.m. before the run, which starts at 11 a.m. and ends at 1 p.m.

Extra color bomb packets are available to purchase at the end of the race and participants are advised to bring sunglasses, a bandana or buff to protect faces during color stations. Participants can also bring a towel or trash bag to cover the seats of their vehicle after the run.

Crystal Torrey, the scout leader of the non-profit organization consisting of 30 children from kindergarten to fifth grade, explained that the proceeds from this event will expect to cover some costs of their summer camp trip.

Cub Scout Pack 631 follows the National Boy Scouts of America and consists of one cubmaster and five adult leaders, who manage the dens: Lions (kindergarten), Tigers (first grade), Wolves (second grade), Bears (third grade), Webelos (fourth grade), and Arrows of Light (fifth grade). All volunteers dedicate their time to this program and the spirit of scouting.

“In the 2019-2020 year, we are hoping to add to our activities by doing an overnight at the Naval Yard in Erie which will cost approximately $1,200 to cover the cost for all current scouts," Torrey said. "As always, it is one of our main goals to see that all of the active scouts in our pack who want to go to Summer Camp are able to go despite any financial barriers that may be faced by their families."

In addition to the color crawl run, scouts contribute towards their camp experience through popcorn sales, flower basket sales and candle sales.

“Funding for the event is coming from sponsorships as well as a part of every entry fee being put back into the race to help to cover the expenses incurred in hosting this event so no funds are being pulled from the pack directly,” Torrey said,

Other financial sponsors that help donate to the program are Burt Young Sales, Cubic Storage, Kathy Buck and Family, Fit Meals LLC., Home Depot, Park & Shop, and Simplicity Salon.

“This is our first year hosting this event, but we are hopeful that this will become an annual event and continue to grow in size and participation over the years,” said the scoutmaster.

The race will be held rain or shine.
