COLORADO SPRINGS, CO. – Former St. Bonaventure men’s basketball standout Jaylen Adams will play for team USA’s AmeriCup Qualifying Team, according to a Feb. 12 USA Basketball release.

Adams was one of the best players to ever put on a Bonnies uniform. He ended his collegiate career at number six on the Bonnies’ all-time scoring list. In his senior year, he led the Bonnies to a 26-8 overall record and an NCAA Tournament appearance, where the Bonnies defeated UCLA in Dayton, Ohio, in the First Four. That season, Adams led the Bonnies with 535 total points.

“I know Bonaventure isn’t for everybody,” Adams told TAPinto Greater Olean during an interview in Menominee Nation Arena where he plays for the Milwaukee Bucks’ NBA G-League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd. "But if it is for you, you’ll have a good coaching staff and a good community that will always support each other, especially on the basketball side. It’s a good place for the under-recruited and the underdogs.”

“Yeah, man. Bona’s will always be home,” Adams said, adding that he is “forever appreciative.”

In the NBA, Adams played 34 games for the Atlanta Hawks in 2018-19. He scored 108 total points, collected 65 assists and made nearly 40 percent of his three three-point shots.

The Hawks waived Adams in July 2019.

With the Herd this season, Adams has made a name for himself. In January, he earned NBA G-League Player of the Month. Last week, Adams was named to the midseason All-NBA G League Team.

“You’ve got to stay even keeled throughout the whole process,” the point guard told TAPinto Greater Olean. "Never too high, never too low. Just appreciate every day, attack every day and try to get better.”

The qualifying team, which has 11 NBA G-League players on its roster, will be coached by Mike Fratello. Fratello, a former NBA head coach, won the NBA Coach of the Year award  in 1986 while he was with the Atlanta Hawks.

The team began training on Feb. 14, and will start playing qualifying games this week. On Feb. 20, the team will face Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Three days later, the team will face Puerto Rico again in Washington, D.C.

The 2020-21 FIBA AmeriCup qualifiers features 16 teams from the Americas divided into four groups of four teams, according to USA Basketball’s release. The top three finishing teams in each group will earn a qualifying berth in the FIBA AmeriCup 2021.
