OLEAN, NY – America’s largest outdoor basketball tournament is returning to Olean this summer.
The Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament, which takes place at sites all over the nation, is set for Aug. 18 to 20 in downtown Olean. Games will take place outdoors to simulate the driveway basketball contests that led the creation of the tournament in 1974.
The tournament is designed so that anyone can play regardless of age or athletic ability. Teams are computer-matched into male and female divisions.
The Olean tournament is expected to attract 300 teams and 10,000 spectators, according to a Greater Olean Chamber of Commerce news release.
Meme K. Yanetsko, the chamber’s chief operating officer, said sponsors and volunteers are needed for the event.
“Regular sponsors are cash sponsors ranging from $50 to $2,500,” she said. “Each sponsor level has a different name and each receive different free items.”
Yanetsko said in-kind sponsors also are needed.
“In-kind sponsors are not cash sponsors,” she explained. “The companies provide product or man hours.”
In addition to the sponsors, about 200 volunteers are needed for scorekeeping, timekeeping and registration, Yanetsko said.
