It took an extra week to learn the winner, but Tracy Mitrano has defeated Max Della Pia in the 23rd District Democratic congressional primary.
Mitrano, an educator and attorney, will take on Rep. Tom Reed in November. Reed has served in Congress in 2013.
Mitrano trailed Della Pia by 26 votes on election night, but she overtook his lead when absentee votes were counted.
“Max Della Pia called me this afternoon to concede the NY-23 Democratic Primary,” Mitrano said in a July 3 statement. “I thanked Max for stepping up to run and mobilizing a strong base of supporters.”
Della Pia, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel, conceded before results were official.
“It has become clear that the absentee ballots did not break in our favor,” he said in a statement issued July 3. “I believe it is important to begin the work of uniting as a party as soon as possible: that is why I am making this announcement this evening.”
