ST. BONAVENTURE, NY — Players on the university's men's basketball team are expected to return to campus on July 18 and 19 for offseason workouts. The women's team members are expected to return on July 25.

News of the basketball players' return schedules was reported in The Buffalo News on July 2.

Members of both the men's and women's soccer teams are expected to return to the university early in August, in line with return timelines in previous years, Scott Eddy, assistant athletic director for athletics communications, told TAPinto Greater Olean on Wednesday.

Eddy also listed policies and measures the university will put in place when the basketball players return:

  • Student-athletes will be tested for COVID-19 before returning to campus at local testing centers nearest their homes. Student-athletes will also fill out a self-evaluation health screening before arrival. In the two weeks prior to returning to campus, student-athletes are asked to self-quarantine.

  • St. Bonaventure will have a testing machine available on campus and will test each student-athlete upon their arrival.
  • Athletes will fill out a health screening each day they are on campus through an app before going to class or attending team activities.
  • Any athlete flagged from the COVID-19 health questionnaire will be evaluated by a physician.
  • Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 while on campus will be taken to a local testing center for another test and be moved to a quarantine room on campus in the interim – a second positive test will result in a 14-day quarantine while being attended to daily by training staff.
  • One positive test within a team will prompt testing of each player and staff member.
  • Hand sanitizer and disinfectant available in all buildings and areas athletes frequently access.
  • Policies will be set in motion to keep each basketball cleaned and wiped down before and after each practice / workout.
  • Masks provided to each athlete (all coaches and staff will wear at all times as well).
  • St. Bonaventure’s basketball student-athletes will remain on campus the remainder of the summer.

St. Bonaventure is in contact with the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities, which is in touch with the governor’s office, according to Eddy. And the university is awaiting guidance on what precautions student-athletes from states with high COVID-19 rates and from other nations may have to take after arrival to campus.

On June 24, New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo issued an executive order requiring individuals traveling to New York from states with high COVID-19 rates to quarantine for 14-days. The quarantine applies to any person arriving from a state with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a 7-day rolling average or a state with a 10% or higher positivity rate over a 7-day rolling average.

The restrictions originally applied to 16 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Cuomo added Delaware, Kansas and Oklahoma to the list Tuesday.

Among student-athletes expected to return in July or August, less than 10 come from the states listed. A larger contingent comes from outside the United States.
