ST. BONAVENTURE, NY — Girl Scouts will have the opportunity to meet female college athletes and try their hand at a number of sports during a Western New York Girls in Sports event on Sept. 30 at St. Bonaventure University.
Partnering on the event are St. Bonaventure, United Way of Cattaraugus County, Girls Scouts of Western New York, Allegany-Limestone Elementary School, Olean Intermediate Middle School and Southern Tier Catholic School.
Girl Scouts ages nine to 12 are invited to participate.
After the St. Bonaventure women’s soccer game at 1 p.m. at the Marra Athletics Complex, the girls will gather on the soccer field for opening ceremonies. Then from 4 to 6 p.m. the girls will have a chance to try their hand in at least six athletic activities, including volleyball, basketball, lacrosse, softball, rugby, track/cross-country, soccer, a rock wall and a fitness challenge.
Participants will rotate among stations in the Reilly Center, Richter Center and athletic fields managed by St. Bonaventure coaches, female student-athletes, ROTC and the Olean YMCA.
In 2006, Western New York Girls in Sports was founded by Mary Wilson, wife of former Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson Jr., with the goal of enriching young girls’ lives through involvement in sports. Mary Wilson’s personal passion for sports was the impetus for creating it and developing its focus on teaching young girls and women the life lessons that sports offer.
