A Day in the Life of Greater Olean

ALLEGANY, NY - People bringing trash and recyclables to the Allegany Transfer Station at 38 Union St. have come to expect a man with a big smile and a friendly “how are you?” to greet them. This man is Gary Rodgers. In rain or snow or heat, Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Rodgers offers his help no matter what. “I love my job because I love to help out when I am needed,” he said. Even when customers decline his offer, he still finds ways to help. Rodgers began working at the ...

Let's TAP About It

In baseball, momentum is the next day's starting pitcher. At least that’s how the Baltimore Orioles’ Hall of Fame Manager Earl Weaver once described the term. Weaver’s words also provide solid advice for how we should view the results of Tuesday’s U.S. Senate race in Alabama. The election was a significant, even historic, victory for Democrat Doug Jones, who defeated Republican Ray Moore in a campaign that captured the nation’s attention. But just as a big win on the baseball diamond does not guarantee a ...

Lucas Got Game

On The Gridiron: Olean was the only local team to win its playoff game, beating Burgard-Math Science Tech 36-24. The Huskies jumped out to an early 29-0 lead in the first half. Senior quarterback Luke Chapman went 9-for-14, throwing for 112 yards with a pair of touchdowns. Olean managed to hold off a fierce Bulldog comeback for the victory. The Huskies will play Medina in the Funke Bowl Class B final Thursday. Portville’s season came to an end last week as they suffered a blowout loss to top-seeded Franklinville/ ...

Tune Into Tola

When Sunday’s season finale of Game of Thrones commenced with a haunting mash-up of the iconic Lannister and Targaryen theme songs, fans knew they would be hanging off the edge of their seats in agony for a record-breaking 79 minutes and 43 seconds. A potential “Red Wedding” scenario was thankfully avoided when the first 40 minutes placed more than a dozen principle characters in one location and not a single one lost a head. But the sigh of relief was short-lived as we realized the episode was only halfway through. The ...

Veterans Oral History Project

What began as an attempt to boost her GPA soon turned into a 22-year career for my mom, Ramona Lee Discavage. On the first day of her freshman year at St. Bonaventure University in 1989, members of the Army ROTC Seneca Battalion helped incoming freshmen move their stuff into their dorm rooms.  Afterward, they invited all of the freshmen to a lunch. “When they described the program, they basically said, ‘It’s an easy way to get an A,’ and I was all about my GPA,” she said.  “I said, ...
