A Day in the Life of Greater Olean

ALLEGANY, NY - People bringing trash and recyclables to the Allegany Transfer Station at 38 Union St. have come to expect a man with a big smile and a friendly “how are you?” to greet them. This man is Gary Rodgers. In rain or snow or heat, Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Rodgers offers his help no matter what. “I love my job because I love to help out when I am needed,” he said. Even when customers decline his offer, he still finds ways to help. Rodgers began working at the ...

Let's TAP About It

For many people, Columbus Day is a time for parades and a celebration of Italian heritage. Others contend that it is wrong to honor Christopher Columbus as a hero. For me, Columbus Day is significant for another reason. It was on Columbus Day in 1975 that I spent my first day in a newsroom as a working journalist as a reporter for a suburban weekly named The Montclair Times. It also was a day I learned a lot about being a journalist. Because Columbus Day is a legal holiday, government offices and most businesses were closed, so I did ...

Lucas Got Game

On The Gridiron: There was no shortage of offense last week as Olean suffered a heart breaking loss to Depew, 44-41 on homecoming. The Huskies have not won since week two giving them a 2-4 record for the season. The 41 points the Huskies scored against Depew are the most they have tallied all year. On Friday, the Huskies will have a great chance to return to the win column when they play Griffith Institute, which is winless on the year. A conference road win would give Olean a lot of confidence nearing the playoffs. Kickoff is ...

Tune Into Tola

When Sunday’s season finale of Game of Thrones commenced with a haunting mash-up of the iconic Lannister and Targaryen theme songs, fans knew they would be hanging off the edge of their seats in agony for a record-breaking 79 minutes and 43 seconds. A potential “Red Wedding” scenario was thankfully avoided when the first 40 minutes placed more than a dozen principle characters in one location and not a single one lost a head. But the sigh of relief was short-lived as we realized the episode was only halfway through. The ...

Veterans Oral History Project

What began as an attempt to boost her GPA soon turned into a 22-year career for my mom, Ramona Lee Discavage. On the first day of her freshman year at St. Bonaventure University in 1989, members of the Army ROTC Seneca Battalion helped incoming freshmen move their stuff into their dorm rooms.  Afterward, they invited all of the freshmen to a lunch. “When they described the program, they basically said, ‘It’s an easy way to get an A,’ and I was all about my GPA,” she said.  “I said, ...
