OLEAN, NY — The city will kick off the holiday season with its annual Santa Claus Lane Parade Friday.
Coordinated by the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce Santa Committee, the parade will begin at 7 p.m. at the intersection of Delaware Avenue and North Union Street.
The event will include Downbeat Percussion, the official drumline for the Buffalo Bills; a flyover by Mercy Flight of Western New York, and a toy drive sponsored by Paul Brown Motors and Toys 4 Tots.
The parade will travel south on Union Street past Lincoln Park. The parade will stagger and use both sides of the street. Parade organizers stress that no spectators will be allowed to view the event on the medians or roundabouts.
Olean Police Chief Jeff Rowley made the following request: “Please, parents, have your family members stay up on the curbs on Union Street, as well as off the medians and roundabouts. They are not to be used for viewing the parade.”
WPIG-FM will be the official emcee of the parade and will announce the lineup at the official emcee booth near the intersection of Union and State streets.
Parking along both sides of North Union Street from Route 417 to Delaware Avenue will be closed at 4 p.m. and reopen after 8:30 p.m. Delaware Avenue will be closed to traffic at 6 p.m. North Union Street will be closed to traffic at 6:45 p.m. The city’s downtown parking lots will be open for free parking. Restrooms in the Olean Municipal Building will be open from 6 to 8:30 p.m.
After the parade, the public is asked to fill up the TOYS 4 TOTS pick-up truck that will be parked on East State Street between Lincoln Park and the municipal building, after the Santa Claus Lane Parade.
Extra uniformed personnel of the Olean Fire and Police departments will be on hand.
