OLEAN, NY – Online shopping has become a popular option for back-to-school items, but some stores in the Greater Olean area still were busy in the days leading up to the start of the school year.

“We were much busier this year than last year,” Ben Englund, who manages the Staples store in Olean, said. “It’s not what it once was because of online shopping. We definitely had more foot traffic this year. I’ve only been in this role for about two years, but we had a lot of traffic throughout the week, more than the weekend, which was interesting to me.”

Rose Crisafulli, who works at Sports Locker, had a similar experience.

"We have gotten more sales in the past,” she said.

Crisafulli said footwear is a popular item for those who come into the store to shop/

“People come in, they buy their kids new sneakers -- a little bit with clothes, but I find people are really particular about their brands and what they want. Kids are a little bit more particular now.”

At Staples, Englund noted that many customers are buying the company’s brand-name items.

“We’ve run out of a lot of Staples branded items,” he said. “People are spending more to get better supplies. We’re the only Staples in the area, so this makes sense.”
