OLEAN, NY – Sixteen absentee ballots changed the results of the Ward 7 Alderman election.
Before the absentee ballot count was completed Wednesday, Reed McElfresh was ahead of David Anastasia by four votes, 198 to 194. After the count, Anastasia finished ahead of McElfresh, 206 to 202.
Anastasia ran on the Democratic and Working Families lines, and McElfresh ran on the Conservative, Republican and Independence lines.
Kelle Brisky, a Cattaraugus County election clerk affiliated with the Republican Party, said these results are official.
Anastasia held the Ward 7 Alderman seat from 1985 to 1995 before being elected to the Cattaraugus County Legislature, where he served for 12 years. During his recent Ward 7 campaign he said his goal is to be responsive to the public and that he believes his biggest concern should be for the citizens.
