As the year of the nation’s next presidential election begins, President Donald J. Trump is the candidate with the most financial support in the Greater Olean area.

During the first three quarters of 2019, Trump received $2,485 in campaign contributions from donors in the six communities covered by TAPinto Greater Olean (Allegany, Cuba, Hinsdale, City of Olean, Town of Olean and Portville), according to Federal Election Commission (FEC) reports.

Former Vice President Joe Biden had the second highest total with $1,100, followed closely by Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont with $1,087.

Rounding out the Democratic field were Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, $500; business executive Andrew Yang, $70, and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, $50.

No other Democratic or Republican presidential candidates received campaign contributions in the first three quarters of 2019 from donors in the six communities TAPinto Greater Olean covers.

All but three of the individual donations for the candidates were less than $500. Trump and Biden each received contributions of $1,000, and Gabbard received one $500 contribution.

Trump’s fiscal support in the Greater Olean area is not surprising. In the 2016 presidential election, he received 63.8% of the votes cast in Cattaraugus County while Hillary Clinton, his Democratic rival, finished with 29.7%, In Allegany County, Trump had 71.9%, and Clinton had 28%.

On the other hand, the 2019 FEC filings show strong overall support for Democrats in an area that generally supports Republican candidates. In the six communities TAPinto Greater Olean covers, Democratic presidential candidates received a combined total of $2,915 in campaign contributions, $430 more than Trump’s total.

Fourth quarter reports for 2019 will become available after Jan. 31, the filing deadline for year-end receipts and disbursements.

St. Bonaventure University journalism students Sean Mickey, Zachary Murphy, Nicholas Ventura and Stephen Wilt contributed to this report.
