OLEAN, NY — A big and sweet part of the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce’s Southern Tier Corporate Challenge 5K Run and Walk has always been the Cereal Challenge.
Results from the 2019 cereal challenge were significant: 7,061 cereal boxes were donated, a jump of 2,878 boxes from 2018. The 2406 boxes of cereal donated by the employees at WNY Logistics earned the award of the most cereal boxes donated. And, with an employee-to-cereal-boxes ratio of 22.99 boxes, SolEpoxy was awarded the most boxes collected per employee.
The 2020 contest, which began June 15, ends Tuesday. Businesses are asked to count and enter the numer on a form and bring all collected donations to the Olean Food Pantry, 8 Leo Moss Dr, Olean (behind the Cattaraugus County admin building and Bethany Lutheran Church), before the end of the business day on Monday. Pantry hours are Mondays, 12:30-4:30 p.m., and Fridays 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Erica Dreher, GOACC member services manager, commented that this year's challenge is particularly important, considering the pandemic.
“Businesses and their employees are battling COVID19 shortfalls — unemployment, remote workers, loss of business, morale low, etc.," she said. "We hope that this challenge will bring some camaraderie and a fun competition back to the workplace and, in turn, bring BIG SMILES on all those children this summer.”
This year’s run and walk will be rescheduled for fall; the date will be announced soon.
