ST. BONAVENTURE, NY — The university is hopeful coronavirus rates will improve in states affected by New York State’s travel restrictions before classes resume on Aug. 24.

“We realize the executive order about quarantining from certain states might be an issue, but it’s going to be a fluid list, with states coming on and off, and we’re hopeful those states will be able to flatten their curves before most students return in late August,” Tom Missel, St. Bonaventure’s chief communications officer, said Tuesday.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo issued an executive order on June 24 that requires individuals traveling to New York from states with high COVID-19 rates to quarantine for 14-days. The quarantine applies to any person arriving from a state with a positive test rate higher than 10 per 100,000 residents over a 7-day rolling average or a state with a 10% or higher positivity rate over a 7-day rolling average.

"We hope to get further guidance from Albany on handling college students, who are in effect moving here for a prolonged period," Missel said.

As of Tuesday, the restrictions applied to 16 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Nevada, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.

Missel said 48 St. Bonaventure students are residents of one of the states affected by the travel restrictions. More than half are from California, home to 14 SBU students, and Texas, where 11 students reside.

“The good news is that almost 80% of our students are from either New York, New Jersey or Connecticut,” Missel said. Connecticut and New Jersey have implemented the same restrictions as New York.
