OLEAN, NY – The Hampton Inn and Suites being built at 1404 Buffalo St. will not open this summer because of construction restrictions in place for the coronavirus pandemic.
Andrew Cuomo's March 7 executive order stated all nonessential construction sites must safely shut down, and that halted the construction of the hotel being developed by Hart Hotels of Buffalo and Krog Group of Orchard Park.
“We’re more than likely not going to open the hotel this year, just for two reasons,” David Hart, president and CEO of Hart Hotels, said. “When we would be finished, which is going to push into the fall… but then having many unknowns in terms of what the economy is going to look like, what people are going to feel about traveling, etc.”
Hart said the hotel is likely not to be opened until next spring.
“If we opened up, we’d probably just lose money,” Hart said. “It’s still going to cost us money to complete the job and stay closed with construction interest, but that’s cheaper than losing money at the operating line.”
The Hampton brand is trademarked under Hilton Worldwide. When opened, the 90-room hotel will feature space for small meetings and a complimentary breakfast, as well as a warming kitchen for catering.
