OLEAN, NY — The city will hold its first cleanup event on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. Titled “All Aboard for Olean,” the event is being held in conjunction with National and Global Cleanup Day.
“This allows us to take some ownership and pride in our community, and I hope it sets a precedent for the future,” Common Council President John Crawford said. “It’s an opportunity to get any and all residents who have never had the time before to join us for a big-ditch effort to clean up the city before winter comes.”
Volunteers will meet at War Veterans Park to join the cleanup crew. Organizers will then split the group into teams and distribute supplies, including garbage bags, gloves and dumpsters.
Multiple dump sites will be marked around the city. Crawford said that he has received “great feedback” from several local groups.
“I’ve gotten commitment from the Chamber of Commerce, Olean High, Jamestown Community College, Bona Responds and more,” he said. “This is a great opportunity for people who need volunteer hours to come out and help.”
The event will target North and South Union streets, West and East State streets, Wayne Street and Front Street.
“This is the first time we’ve done this in Olean, but other communities in the area have been doing it for over 50 years,” Crawford said. “It becomes a part of the community and starts to turn into a culture of paying respect to your local environment.”
Crawford said the city has talked about a city-wide park cleanup in the spring to coincide with Earth Day.
Volunteers who are interested in Saturday’s cleanup can sign up here. The rain date for the event is Oct. 5.
