OLEAN, NY — The REAP Olean Farmers’ Market, scheduled to open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., has COVID-19 safety procedures in place and an online ordering option.
Customers can visit the website https://olean.eatfromfarms.com to view the products available for the coming week. Each ordering window begins Tuesdays at 11 a.m. and ends Wednesdays at 11 p.m. The Tuesday start gives the produce farmers time to estimate what inventory they can make available that week, and the 36-hour window gives all the vendors time on Thursdays and Fridays to review the orders, plan harvests and purchase additional ingredients for popular items. On Saturdays, during the market’s final two hours, customers can pick up their orders from the manager’s booth.
“We’re interested to see how many customers take advantage of our new online ordering website,” Stephanie Beneng, market manager, said. "With the social distancing guidelines, right now is an ideal time for us to try online orders.”
Popularity of the online ordering option will reduce overall foot traffic at the market and make social distancing easier, Beneng said.
New procedures will allow market staff to monitor the number of shoppers in the open-air building at a given time. Shoppers will be required to enter through the center and check in at Beneng’s manager booth. And shoppers will be encouraged to register for a shopping time slot of 20 minutes on the website SignUp Genius. Customers who are registered will be able to enter the building without waiting in line. Walk-ins will continue to be welcomed, but may need to wait in line if the pavilion is already at capacity.
Other new procedures will include spacing the vendors widely, eliminating all food consumption on-site and permitting only vendors to handle product.
“We want both our vendors and our customers to feel confident and safe in our space,” Beneng said. “We’ll do everything possible to get fresh, local food in the hands of our customers, while preventing our market from being a point of community spread.”
