OLEAN, NY — The William O. Smith Recreation Center and Franchot municipal pools will be closed for the 2020 summer season, Mayor William J. Aiello announced Monday.

“This was a tough call as the pools are a very popular attraction in our community,” Aiello said. “However, concerns for the safety of our residents during the COVID-19 pandemic ultimately led us to this decision.”

Aiello said the city will maintain the pools properly so they will be ready to reopen in summer of 2021.

The mayor said he made the decision to close the pools after consultation with Kris Shewairy, program director of the city’s Division of Youth and Recreation Services.
