OLEAN, NY — A patient who was admitted to Olean General Hospital Wednesday tested positive for COVID-19 on Friday, according to a news release the hospital issued Saturday.
The patient, a 35-year-old woman who resides in Allegany County, is not on a ventilator and is recovering in the hospital’s intensive care unit, the hospital said in the release.
Cattaraugus County Health Director Dr. Kevin Watkins said the hospital staff treating the individual are taking required precautions.
“We have checked with the hospital to make sure that all personnel had proper PPE on when they were in contact with the patient,” Watkins said. “It appeared that they had followed those guidelines.”
Watkins said when patients arrive at the hospital with respiratory illnesses, medical staff immediately assume COVID-19 and treat the individual as if they are COVID-19 positive.
“Those who enter the room with the patient will log in so that we know who enters and exits the room," Watkins added. "We do a very thorough cleaning after the patient has left.”
Because the patient is an Allegany County resident, "we have turned the investigation over to them," Watkins said ."They will conduct all of her contact tracing.”
